RECLAMATION
Women remain a globally oppressed gender. Subject to multiple forms of discrimination ranging from gender inequality and sexual abuse to labour exploitation, they continue to experience ongoing denigration. Reclamation highlights those organisations committed to significant social impact, empowering women to take charge of their lives through dignified and purposeful employment.
With particular concentration on NGOs and the implementation of fair-trade employment models, it examines the deployment of craft activities such as knitting and crochet. The project investigates two singularly different locations appreciably linked by identical principles – to restore women to their rightful status. The Kenana Knitters are located in Njoro, a rural part of Kenya. Entrenched in patriarchal tradition, Kenyan society coerces its female population into marginalised positions. The Kenana Knitters create a platform to improve women’s lives by providing an income that proceeds directly into the maker’s hand. Udruzene is an association based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Utilizing the act of knitting to confront the trauma of war, it seeks the reintegration of women back into society through acts of economic and psychosocial empowerment.
